Engagement Ring Guide for Men in Salt Lake City
If you’re anything like me, you had no idea how complicated engagement ring shopping could be. It’s something that you know is coming your entire life, but when it crept up on me I realized: I have no idea what to do, or even where to start! I just thought I’d find something nice and simple, pick a diamond, and be done with it! Imagine my surprise when I discovered the 4 C’s of diamonds – carat, clarity, cut, and color – the existence of weddings bands, and dozens of different styles. As Men, we aren’t really exposed to engagement rings growing up – many girls dream and plan for their ideal wedding for years while boys…. not so much. I went through the gauntlet without a guide so you don’t have to; and here’s what I learned.
What I learned:
- Every woman has a different taste. You should talk to your girlfriend‘s friends, or try to get her to drop some hints. Maybe she wants something simple, elegant, and modern. Or perhaps her ideal engagement ring is vintage and ornate. You can even talk to her directly about engagement ring style and preferences – depending on how far along and comfortable you are in your relationship. The bottom line men? This ring isn’t for you. This is your fiance-to-be’s engagement ring – that she will wear every day – so she had better like it. My girlfriend ended up wanting a simple solitaire band, with a square cut (princess cut) diamond.
- The 4 C’s get a lot of hype and can appear to be intimidating at first. But really, it is pretty simple. Carat is the diamond size – easy! The cut is the shape, this one may take a bit of research but the most common are round cut and square cut (princess cut) diamonds. I know that a lot of men think that diamond color is pretty uniform, but many cheap diamonds appear yellow upon close inspection. Diamond clarity is also simple and self-explanatory, some diamonds are more cloudy than others. Depending on these factors, your engagement ring can be cheap or eat you out of house and home! - The band is not to be ignored! There is a lot of focus on the diamond part of an engagement ring – but the band shouldn’t be overlooked! There are solitaire bands, infinity bands, and so many more. This is where your girlfriend’s preference should weigh heavily on your decision, and make sure to think about the future wedding band(s)! I didn’t even know that these existed until about a year into my relationship with my fiance – but they can really influence your decision because the engagement ring band and the wedding band should work together for the most stylish and elegant outcome. - Don’t feel rushed! There are many options for engagement rings in Salt Lake City, take your time to browse and compare. Men would do well to consider all the options to guarantee they get the ring that is just perfect for their needs, and use their resources to guide them to the promised land of a happy bride-to-be! Remember – engagement rings don’t have to be expensive – there are traditions such as the “three months pay rule”, but really just do what you can afford, even if some consider it cheap!
